Curly hair is pretty much in for everyone these days. Even if you have bangs, leave ‘em curly like Freja Beha Erichsen for that French girl type of cool.  

Naturally, we had to try ColorProof’s CurlyLocks Color Protect Curl Mousse to see how well it kept our own precious curls. The special formula in this mousse is the IllumaCurl Complex that gives structure and activates curl memory using revolutionary polymers, natural sugar cane and ultra-nourishing essential oils.



Two ingredients caught our eye: Sugar cane seemed like a pretty cool component to have in a mousse. It provides long-lasting shape and control to the curl structure. We were also happy to see nutrient-rich seaweed for some added hydration. This additive is especially good for those with curly hair, since their hair tends to be more dry than those with straight locks.

First Impression

We loved how the product left the hair springy and defined without getting crunchy. We give it a 10 out of 10 in the frizz-reducing department. Our hair felt especially defined and fresh after applying CurlyLocks. The best part? No residue. The product absorbed into the hair without any leftover flakes or visible product. Here’s a review from our in-office tester, Jeri.

What does product feel like?
CurlyLocks is a light foam that feels somewhat sticky.

What does is smell like?
It smells delicious—definitely fruity and, more specifically, citrusy.

What is the mousse nozzle like?
The mousse nozzle is very small and narrow. I think it's designed that way so you could put a concentrated amount of the product on a very specific spot on your head. It also comes out slowly so you can control how much you’re applying.

When did you apply the product?
I applied the product at night after I showered and let my hair air dry for about half an hour.

Where did you apply the product?
I scrunched the product into all of my hair, concentrating on the mid-lengths and ends. If I could go back, I would apply more of the product directly to my roots to get more root volume.

How were the results compared to using other curl/mousse products?
This particular mousse absorbed into the hair really well without leaving any residue. It definitely reduced more frizz from my curls as well. The main point of difference I noticed was there were absolutely no flakes or residue when my hair dried.

Would you recommend this to a friend?
Yes! The effect it had on my hair was perfect. My husband said he really liked it.

Who do you feel this would be good for?
My hair is more wavy than curly, but the mousse made my waves bouncier and more defined. Those with really curly hair will get strong curl definition and those with wavy hair will get bouncier, more ringlet-like curls.
