In an industry that’s always changing, it’s easy to get caught up and overcomplicate things. Whether you’ve been doing hair forever or only a year, Kara Kalamatas, Keune Regional Educator, is all about bringing the basics back to haircutting and coloring. That’s why we’ve selected her as Premier Beauty’s February Educator of the Month! Congrats, Kara!

What do you love about education?

It’s a natural fit for me—I come from a family of teachers, and my dad is a retired elementary/high school principal. He’s the first person I talk to after a class. He doesn’t know anything about hair, but he likes to talk about the flow!

What’s your favorite product from Keune?

Hands down, our color line is my favorite. Having worked with several other lines, I can say it’s the best in the industry. I love what the line consists of as far as how easy it is to understand and how much it conditions and repairs. Keune’s color line always delivers the exact information that’s taught—no surprises.

What's the newest, freshest approach you're bringing to education?

It may not be a new approach but I feel bringing people back to the basics really gets our minds in check of what this is all about. I believe we all have the habit of complicating what we’re dealing with when all we need to do is ground ourselves.

What are the common problems faced by stylists today? 

Whether you’re new or a 20+ year veteran, you have to accept that the beauty world is continually changing. You have to grow with it if you want to be successful as a salon. Without education, we would be complacent and stuck. One of the main reasons why our clients leave us is because we don’t offer them anything new. However, if you continue your education on a regular basis, you will learn the trends and the most efficient techniques.

What are your educator goals?

My goal is to become a Keune Advanced Academy Trainer. I’m in the Keune Academy Mentee Trainer Program, right now. Eventually, I want to take a trip to the Keune headquarters in Holland and, down the road, I also wouldn’t mind being a platform artist!
