Meet Jessica Spilker, April Educator of the Month

04.01.2020

Jessica Spilker, Brand Manager and Educator for Keune, focuses on the fundamentals of color, and that’s why we’ve selected her as Premier Beauty’s April Educator of the Month.

How’d you get your start in education?

Keune was looking to expand its education program in my area. Their Regional Sales Manager reached out to me because she thought I’d be a good fit, so I applied. After 17 years of working behind the chair, it was a natural progression for me.

What’s your favorite product from Keune?

My absolute favorite Keune product is Care Keratin Smooth 2-Phase Spray. It’s a leave-in conditioner with keratin and protein, so it rebuilds hair. It is also a heat protectant, so it has everything you need all-in-one product. I use it on everyone.

What's the newest, freshest approach you're bringing to education?

I always focus on the fundamentals of color—the color wheel, underlying pigment, etc. The only way to get good results is to have a solid understanding of the basics and improve your skills from there.

What are the common problems faced by stylists today?

Keeping up with the demand of clients coming in with pictures they found on Instagram is a big challenge. The photos are unbelievable, and it’s our job as stylists to be able to communicate the realities of the look to them. We can’t be afraid to consult with our client and be transparent about what it’s going to take to get the look in terms of the process and the cost. It’s always better to be upfront than to underdeliver.

What do you want stylists to know about education?

Stylists need to realize that even as educators, we’re still learning; no one knows it all.

Any advice for educators?

My mentor always told me, when you’re green, you grow; when you’re ripe, you rot, and this is so true. We have to be life-long learners. It’s our responsibility as educators to continue educating ourselves.

What are your educator goals?

I love connecting with stylists, and if I can give them one useful piece of information that makes them better behind the chair, then I’ve fulfilled my purpose. I want to help stylists be the best version of themselves, so I want to keep doing what I’m doing and grow as a stylist and educator.

What new skill would you like to learn? (hair or non-hair!)

Professionally, I want to continue challenging myself to keep up with the latest trends. On a personal level, I am determined to learn to ride a motorcycle.
