Meet Makenna Moore, our Featured Educator for June 2021

06.04.2021

Makenna Moore, GOLD.KEY Educator with KEVIN.MURPHY is our Featured Educator for June!

How’d you get your start in education?

I was always interested in becoming an educator, and I knew I wanted to work with the KEVIN.MURPHY brand. Marissa Lauren, DIAMOND.KEY Educator with KEVIN.MURPHY has been a big mentor for me and helped guide me into becoming an educator.

What’s your favorite product from your KEVIN.MURPHY?

It’s so hard to choose, but if I had to pick just one, I’d say SHIMMER.ME BLONDE. It’s the perfect way to add a touch of shine to any look, and it’s so pretty!

What's the newest, freshest approach you're bringing to education?

Right now, I feel like we’re all kind of in the same realm of having to learn how to educate through Zoom. I try to connect with people and engage with them as much as possible, despite being on a computer screen. I like to show stylists the physical products on screen as well, so they’re not just looking at a photo in a PDF; it makes the product a little more real.

What are the common problems faced by stylists today?

Everyone is still learning how to work with the new safety guidelines, so that has been a challenge. It’s important to stay true to yourself and just do your best to make all of your clients comfortable and happy.

We’re also still struggling with client expectations; clients see something on social media and don’t necessarily understand that they might be looking at a wig or a filter. I just try to be real with my clients and let them know that what they see on social media isn’t always what it seems.

What do you want stylists to know about education?

Education is SUPER important if you want to be successful in your career. Trends are changing weekly; I’m not doing anything that I learned in school. It all changes so quickly. As a stylist, you should never stop pushing yourself and never stop learning.

What are your educator goals?

I love what I do. I want to keep connecting with like-minded people and helping them to be successful. At the same time, I also want to continue growing as an educator; I want to push myself out of my comfort zone and work toward being a better public speaker.

What new skill would you like to learn (hair or non-hair related)?

I’d really like to expand my extension skills and learn how to do keratin-tip extensions. I also really want to learn how to make a good loaf of bread!

Who’s your biggest mentor?

Marissa Lauren, as I mentioned, has been a huge mentor for me, as has my boss, Meghan Komosinski. And of course, my mom—those three are my biggest cheerleaders, and I’m so grateful for them.

Where do you find your inspiration? (for teaching, for behind the chair, for personal life)

Definitely on Instagram; I am constantly on there watching videos and looking for educators with classes I can take. I love to find other stylists I can learn from.

What is the most rewarding part about educating?

I love watching people succeed. It’s so rewarding to see stylists pick up new skills they can use behind the chair from a class you taught. It’s also fun to watch them fall in love with KEVIN.MURPHY products.

What is your favorite cutting or coloring technique?

I am all about the blondes—I love creating an icy white blonde.

What is a word of advice that you have for new stylists?

Being a stylist is not the easiest career when you first start out, but if you give it your all, it can be really fulfilling.

Any advice for seasoned stylists?

Stay humble and never stop learning: Always push yourself outside the box.

How do you like to spend your days off?

I love to hang with my cat, Leo, and tend to my garden. I’m also a huge fan of medical dramas.

Favorite pick-me-up in the middle of a busy salon day?

Preworkout energy drink has been my go-to lately. Otherwise, I love cheesy snack packs.
